Woodside's housing stock is defined by large, low-density estate properties rather than conventional subdivisions. Homes sit on multi-acre parcels among oaks and redwoods, and many include barns, stables, paddocks, vineyards, tennis courts, and pools. The architectural range spans historic country houses and early-20th-century estates built by wealthy San Franciscans, through English-countryside and Mediterranean styles, to contemporary hillside homes. There is minimal multifamily or tract development, and zoning has long favored open space and equestrian use. This scarcity of density and abundance of land make Woodside's housing among the most distinctive — and least dense — on the San Francisco Peninsula.

Woodside is less a collection of named subdivisions than a scattering of estate properties across a wooded, hilly landscape. Homes line the town's winding country roads — Woodside Road, Canada Road, and the lanes branching toward the Santa Cruz Mountains — with the Interstate 280 corridor marking the eastern edge and open-space preserves framing the west. The area around the Filoli estate and the historic horse farms off Woodside Road carries particular equestrian heritage, while the hillsides above town give way to redwood forest. This structure creates a uniformly low-density, rural-feeling community rather than distinct neighborhood clusters.

Woodside offers a rare combination of rural privacy and Silicon Valley convenience. Residents live on large, wooded properties with room for horses, barns, and orchards, yet are minutes from the venture capital offices of Sand Hill Road and the technology campuses along the Peninsula. Equestrian life remains central, with stables, riding trails, and a long horse-owning tradition woven into the community's identity. There is no dense downtown; instead, the town's modest commercial center and its residents' estates are set among oaks and redwoods. It is a place defined by discretion, open space, and an unusual degree of landed luxury close to major employment centers.

Woodside is served by two public school districts. The Woodside Elementary School District operates a single kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school serving the incorporated town, giving it an intimate, community-centered educational setting. For high school, students attend Woodside High School within the Sequoia Union High School District, which serves much of southern San Mateo County. This small elementary district and regional high school arrangement is typical of the Peninsula's affluent, low-density communities, and many families also make use of the area's independent private schools and nearby higher-education institutions.

Woodside sits directly along Interstate 280, a scenic freeway that runs the length of the San Francisco Peninsula and places the town between San Francisco to the north and Silicon Valley to the south. State Route 84 crosses the town, providing a route over the Santa Cruz Mountains toward the Pacific coast, and Sand Hill Road and other arterials connect Woodside to Stanford University and the venture-capital district of Menlo Park. There is no rail station within the town, so commuting is overwhelmingly by car, with Caltrain available in nearby Redwood City and Menlo Park for travel up and down the Peninsula.

Woodside is ringed by protected open space that defines its outdoor life. Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve offers miles of trails through redwood and fir forest, while Wunderlich County Park provides hiking and horseback-riding routes through oak woodlands, with a notable equestrian trail network. Horseback riding on private and public trails is a daily reality for many residents, and the town's stables and arenas support its equestrian culture. The historic Filoli estate offers formal gardens and walking grounds, and the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains add further hiking and cycling options. Woodside is, in effect, a community set within a continuous band of parkland.
